Face mask

wood, light- and dark brown patina, remains of kaolin, of oval hollowed form, crested coiffure and lobes aside, the narrow face characterized by bean-shaped slit eyes underneath arching brows, slightly dam., missing part (backside at the rim), cracks (left eye, forehead, backside);
the so-called 'White masks of the Ogooué' were ascribed to the Shira, Punu and the Lumbo likewise. Today they are mainly used for entertaining the audience on certain festive occasions. But in former times they had important ritual functions at burial ceremonies as embodyment of male and female ancestors.
