Head ornament «naute» and yams mask
Abelam, Papua-Neuguinea
2 pieces, cantilevered disc-shaped ornament of lygodium wickerwork, h: 44 cm, plaited in openwork design with zigzag ornaments, the struts inbetween dyed with red and white pigment, slightly dam., broken in one place (outer rim), paint rubbed off; dance ornament for «big men» («nimandu»), worn e.g. at the so-called «kagu» dance in the ritual house. By small rods and cord attached to the hair on the back of the head.
Yams mask, Maprik, h: 22 cm, lygodium wickerwork, dyed with red and yellow ochre, black and white pigment, showing a stylized mask face, dominated by spherical bulging eyes, paint rubbed off; after the harvest of the big yams used for decorating the fruits.
