Overmodeled ancestor skull
Südliches Malekula, Vanuatu
human skull, narrow in form with a striking lengthened back of the head, aside of the latter overmodeled with a clay-like mass, the curvatures achieved by a bast fibre underlay, the opened mouth revealing five original teeth, the facial plane dyed with red pigment, small cracks within the mass, layer of pigment missing in some areas;
the skull presumably was part of a complete ancestor effigy. The body consists of a cane frame overmodeled with vegetable-fibre paste. Subsequently it was painted and decorated with bark belt, breast ornaments, shells etc. The head after all is the overmodeled skull of the ancestor himself. These ancestor effigies were called «rambaramp»
