Dance requisite «bair»
Tolai, Neu Britannien
light-weighted wood, polychrome natural colours, oval handle, carved with a u-shaped element formed by curved bird necks, crowned by a human half figure with both arms raised aside, coiffure of fur, crowned by a high-towering, lancet-shaped superstructure in delicate openwork design, based on leaf veins or feathers, enlivened by light polychrome paint, grass green, yellow, sky blue..., slightly dam., rep. (left arm), on base;
used at the so-called «dance of the young coconut» - «kulau». Just men were allowed to wear such dance staffs. Women had to guide the dancers to the dance ground or accompany them with singing. The «bair» depict ancestor spirits. Their conception is determined by the picture the artist had from the spirit which inspired him.
