Iatmul, Papua-Neuguinea
wood, painted with red, white and black pigment, of narrow elongated form, the long slender nose sculpted as an openwork handle touching the tapering chin, which is prolonged by a birds sculpture, the rim entirely spread with clay-like mass, abundantly decorated with cowrie- and nassa snails, the plane inbetween painted with curvilinear ornaments, coiffure of real hair;
local mask type of Tambanam - about 160 kilometers from the Sepik river mouth upwards. The mask depicts a clan ancestor, who is looked upon as the master builder of the Tambanam houses.
