Post figure 'hampatong'
Dayak, Indonesien
greyish brown wood, presumably iron wood ('Eusideroxylon Zwageri'), round post supporting a slender figure, carved with long trousers, in the right arm holding a gamecock, the figure as a whole dominated by a big heavy-weighted head with crown-like headcrest, dam., cracks (head, upper part of the body and post right hand side, backside), missing parts (right hand, headcrest), place of repair (right foot), traces of weathering, on base;
'hampatong' - the word, meaning '(wooden) statue', 'figure', embraces a great variety of objects: figures on poles, such as the present one, were erected as a remembrance of a beloved dead.
