Post of a Chiefs House
Ngaju Dayak, Zentral-Kalimantan/Borneo, Indonesien
wood, dark brown patina, traces of black patina, carved with a monumental head sculpture, characterized by protruding eyes, a broad mouth with single teeth and an elongated ornamental tongue, the surface shows severe traces of weathering, insect caused missing parts (both rims, backside), lichen in some areas, on metal base;
presumably this post was originally part of a funerary monument. There existed numerous variants on this type of momument, from real miniature houses elevated on four piles to coffins supported on one or two posts. The prominently protruding tongue is a characteristic trait for protective beings with the function to ward off evil spirits.
