Modang Dayak, Telen River, Ost-Kalimantan/Borneo, Indonesien
wood, mat greyish brown patina, superstructure in open work design, representing a highly abstract anthropomorphic figure or mask face, min. dam., cracks, missing parts, traces of weathering, on base;
'Dayak' is a collective term for hundreds of various tribes. They settle all over Borneo, within the area of three different states (Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia).
In the past the Dayak were feared for their ancient tradition of headhunting practices. After conversion to Islam or Christianity and anti-headhunting legislation by the colonial powers the practice was banned and disappeared, only to resurface in the late 1990s, when the Dayak started to attack Madurese emigrants in an explosion of ethnic violence.
