Big male ancestor figure
Maprik, Papua-Neuguinea
wood, painted with red and yellow ochre, kaolin, high-towering slender body, crowned by a hornbill, painted with traditional ornaments: dogs canine teeth diadem, cymbium breast ornament, arm- and leg rings, lattice patterns, missing parts because of insect caused damage (backside at the base, hornbill), cracks (head and shoulder right hand side), paint rubbed off, on base;
representing the Yams spirit 'wapinyan' or a male ancestor. The hornbill, an important ancestral head-hunting symbol, presumably alluding to his skill as warrior.
H: 107 cm, (5238/005)
