Large standing slit drum 'atingting'
Vanuatu, Ambrym Island, Fanla Village
greyish brown wood (presumably breadfruit tree), hollow tree trunk with slit-shaped opening, crowned by an elongated head with concave vaulted facial plane, carved with big, disc-shaped eyes 'mat teleusi' (full-moon eye) and bulky nose, crude milled endpiece for fixing to the ground, dam., minor missing parts, cracks, traces of weathering;
it is to be noted that the ancestral faces of the slit drums 'atingting' lack a mouth. The slit which is beaten is the mouth and the sound is the voice of the ancestors, who speak in coded rhythms across large areas, sending messages back and forth.
H: 200 cm, coll. in situ, 1987 (5230/006)
