David Hockney (1937)
Pretty Tulips, signed in pencil and dated 'david hockney 70' (lower right) and titled (lower centre), lithograph in colours, numbered 112/200, image & full sheet 73x51 cm, Provenance:
From the estate of Gérard Lemaître.
Literature:
'Catalogue Raisonné. David Hockney Prints 1954-77', Petersburg Press (ed.), London 1979, introduction by Andrew Brighton, no. 115., Published in 1970 by Petersburg Press, London. "I draw flowers every day and send them to my friends so they get fresh blooms every morning.”
This beautiful print features a cheery blue vase of pink tulips opening and bending towards the light on a simple grey surface. Reminiscent of the artist's minimal sketches and line work, this piece is classic Hockney. Flowers provided a constant source of inspiration for Hockney, who created many floral still lifes. This print was published in 1970 for the artist's retrospective at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London.
