Condition:
The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is relined and shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals small retouchings to the face of the figure and to the background, as well as overpainted areas regarding the flowers and fruits. The visibility of the signature appears to have been deliberately enhanced, since the area lights up brightly under UV light inspection. The stretcher measures 114.5 x 91 cm and the frame 132 x 110.5 cm.
George Stevens (c.1790-c.1865)
George Stevens was active as a still life and animal painter in London. In 1810/65 he was able to exhibit his works at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. (cbo)
