Two birds in a forest, one with a butterfly in his beak, the view of a vast landscape opening in the background. Angermayer followed the Leiden fine painting and his work served exemplary to further still life painters in Prague. He is valued as the Bohemian version of pre rococo still life painting.
Condition:
The painting shows regular craquelure. The stretcher has left some pressure marks on the canvas. There are chips along the edges. The gilt wooden frame with small chips. The stretcher measures 37.9 x 28.5 cm and the total dimensions including the frame are 47.3 x 38 cm.
Johann Adalbert Angermayer (1674-1740)
Johann Adalbert Angermayer was born in Bilina. Since 1699 he lived in Prague, where he was active until his death. 1707-27 he was a member of the painters’ guild of the Old City of Prague. Under the influence of his teacher Johann Rudolf Byss he specialized in still life painting. His oeuvre includes floral still lifes, hunting and kitchen still lifes, nature scenes and vanitas compositions. His works can be found among others in the museums of Augsburg, Schwerin, Prague and Vienna.
