Josep Cusachs (1851-1908)
Born in France, Josep Cusachs spends most of his life in the regions of Catalonia. In 1865, he started his military career at the Academia Militar de Artillería. In 1882 he applied for a posting in the rank of commander to dedicate himself to painting. However, military motives are a focus within his subject.
Especially the cavalry, due to his love of horses, can be found often in his works. In 1887, Queen Maria Cristina purchased at the Madrid exhibition ‘En el campo de maniobras’, a painting of this subject. He occasionally deals with religious themes. As a portraitist, he created effigies of King Alfonso XIII, and General Juan Prim. In his later years landscapes he specialized in equestrian motifs. The landscapes of its paintings were often executed by other artists. (bde)
