STELE WITH VISHNU AND GODDESSES
Grey stone. India, Pala Dynasty, approx.
10th Century

Rare, large stele presenting a four-armed Vishnu on a lotus base, considered to be the great ‘preserve’ and manifestation of goodness. In the four hands are the attributes indicative for this god - the club gada and wheel cakra, which is also a sun symbol. The one lower hand displays the gesture of ‘wish fulfillment’, varadamudra. The other holds the attribute shankha, a shell, symbol for the origin of all life. Both lowered hands rest on lotus blossoms. Vishnu is accompanied by two female goddesses standing in tribhanga, left is Lakshmi with lotus and frond, on the right is Sarasvati with the long-necked string instrument vina. Around these depictions are further figures, as well as riders on mythical creatures. At the base there are additional flowers and two kneeling worshippers in prayer.

Shape: Large rectangular stele mounted on a wooden base
Dimensions: HEIGHT 77.5 CM, WIDTH 47.5 CM
Condition: Good to very good, age related condition; the normally rounded top part of the stele and part of the club are missing
Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Helmut Rainer in Innsbruck, acquired decades ago from the former Vienna Gallery Zacke in the Schulerstraße
