Xie Nanxing (1970)
Ten Teardrops, signed, dated and inscribed 'ten drops of tears xie-nanxing 1997' and titled (on the reverse), oil on canvas, 78x78 cm, Born in 1970 in Chongqing, Sichuan Province, Xie Nanxing received international acclaim with his participation at the Venice Biennale in 1999 and has since then extensively exhibited worldwide. The artist now lives and works in Beijing and Chengdu, China, and is known for his visually diverse paintings that reflect theoretical approaches, cultural references, and experimental painting techniques. The present lot, painted in 1997, is part of a series of small sized works titled ‘Ten Teardrops’ and relates to other series from the 1990’s, in which the allusion to pain and bodily harm is a recurring theme. In their modest format of 80x80 cm, the Ten Teardrops series stands out in Nanxing’s oeuvre and gives these works an air of intimacy and privacy. Stylized faces of a young girl are depicted in monotone shades, expressing sorrow and affliction. Shimmering tears add beauty to pain and the close-up of the face evokes an intended emotional reaction in the spectator. The theme of bodily harm and the depiction of pain reaches a peak in Nanxing’s untitled series from 1999, depicting nude and injured young men, which were contributed to the Venice Biennale and for which he received critical acclaim. Xie Nanxing’s paintings in more recent years oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Evolving from the 90’s figurative works to semi-abstract and abstract work after the millennium, his work is seeking a synthesis between figuration and abstraction stimulated by the artist’s growing interest in the removal of full narratives in his works. Employing video, film, and advanced painting techniques, like his print- technique, where he puts a canvas on top of another canvas allowing the paint to seep through; the final work leaves the audience with an imprint of the original story and working process.

, Provenance: Acquired in 1997 directly from the artist in his atelier in Chengdu, China.
