Note:
Salvatore Mangione, known as Salvo, was an Italian artist whose work is characterized by a blend of surrealism, metaphysical elements and conceptual art. Salvo worked in Turin, where he became involved with the Arte Povera, a significant and influential art movement during the late 1960s. The movement represented a departure from conventional artistic practice, and sought new ways of creating and experiencing art. Salvo started out by making conceptual art, and turned to painting in the early 1970s, placing colour at the core of his research.
Salvo depicted enigmatic, vibrant, intensely saturated landscapes and dream-like city scenes of his homeland in the 1980s, reminiscent of the style of metaphysical painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978). Like de Chirico, he often incorporated elements from the visual vocabulary of the Italian Renaissance.
By simplifying architectural forms into fundamental geometric shapes, Salvo's style also echoes the approach of Paul Cézanne. His artwork revolves around the interplay of light, colour, and shape, devoid of specific subject matter, as can be seen in this lot.
