Très rare grand plat armorié en majolique de Deruta montrant le blason de la famille Orsini, début XVIe siècle A very rare large Deruta maiolica armorial charger with the arms of the Orsini family, early 16th century The arms painted in the centre flanked by cornucopiae and blue and ochre foliate scrollwork with yellow flower terminals around the rim, 42cm diam. (cracked) A similarly decorated charger - the only other recorded example - with the arms of Baglioni (probably those of Troilo Baglioni, Bishop of Perugia (1501-1506) is published by C. Leprince/J. Raccanello (eds.), Sacred and Profane Beauty, 2017, cat. 8 The authors note (p. 66) that the distinctive feature of the design extending from the centre of the dish over the rim is characteristic of early Deruta wares. The Orsini family was one of the most important in Rome for centuries and the arms frequently appear on Deruta maiolica, for which Rome was one of the most important markets (Timothy Wilson/Cristina Maritano (eds.), L'Italia del Rinascimento Lo splendore della maiolica, 2019, p. 69, cat. 45 for a lustre-decorated dish depicting a soldier holding a shield with the Orsini arms). Several other lustre-decorated Deruta dishes with a sphinx in the centre supporting the arms of Orsini are recorded in the literature: see Jeanne Giacomotti, Catalogue des majoliques des musées nationaux, 1974, cat. 576 and 577 for two examples in Cluny.
