TONKOTSU (BOÎTE À TABAC) EN BOIS IMITANT LE KINKARAKAWA (CUIR GAUFRÉ) ET OJIME EN NOYAU DE PÊCHE REPRÉSENTANT UN RAT ET UN DAIKON Début du XIXe siècle A WOOD TONKOTSU (TOBACCO BOX) IMITATING A KINKARAKAWA (EMBOSSED LEATHER) POUCH AND A CARVED PEACH STONE OJIME OF A RAT AND DAIKON Early 19th century Carved to simulate embossed leather decorated with diagonal patterned sections, the top section of the ground with punched roundels, the bottom section decorated with a diaper pattern, each side with a large shishi (Chinese mythical lion), one recumbent beneath a large peony flower, the other sitting up with its head raised, the simulated clasp comprising a stylised shishi head above a chrysanthemum, unsigned; with a carved peach stone ojime depicting a rat and daikon, signed Kozan. 10.2cm (4in) wide. 木彫とんこつ 金唐皮 銘「光山」 19世紀前期 Provenance: Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection.
