1935 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 “Soffio di Satana” Aerodynamic Saloon Coachwork by Touring of Milan Chassis no. 710645 Engine no. 710645 Vittorio Jano's all new six cylinder engine appeared in 1934, a twin overhead camshaft design displacing 2,309cc, with a seven main bearing crankshaft and an output of 76bhp at 4,400rpm. It was to power a range of up-to-the-minute Alfa Romeos, the long chassis Turismo, the short chassis Gran Turismo and the twin carburettored “Pescara”. The 6C 2300 Gran Turismo is compared with the 6C 1750 in Hull & Slater's standard work, “Alfa Romeo - A History”, coming out with flying colours: “The steering is as precise, and lighter. The engine is very much smoother and much more powerful……As for performance we have averaged 72mph down the latter half of M1 without in any way pressing the car.” This aerodynamic saloon by Touring of Milan is one of just three built and is the only example known to survive. The first was commissioned by the renowned Italian poet, Gabriele d'Annunzio, who helped design its lines and gave it its name (“Devil's Breath”). The second was delivered to celebrated soprano, Gina Cigna, and the third, this car, was built for Barone Mariano Pagliaro who specified “Blu Notte d'Oriente” livery with blue leather upholstery, to match his coat of arms. This car was raced in the 1934 Targa Abruzzo, winning the Turismo class before delivery to the Baron. The engine was ordered to Gran Turismo specification with larger valves etc. and according to the owner acceleration is remarkable. The stylish interior features individual front seats with room for three in the rear, vanity sets inset into the back of the front seats with interior light fittings in silver. The pillarless four door body design represents the individuality of Touring and the detailed wood cappings are a feature of that coachbuilder. The blue steering wheel is colour coded to the livery of the car. The Baron kept the car into the 1970s when it passed to an Italian collector and restoration commenced. The engine was consigned to specialist Luigi Bonfanti and the restoration was completed by the owner, before the car was acquired by the present Italian vendor at BROOKS' 2000 Nürburgring auction. Since restoration the car has covered just 3,500km and has been displayed at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance. It has an Italian logbook, is A.S.I. homologated (highest degree-gold plaque) and is featured in the Touring book by Angelo Tito Anselmi. A unique and highly stylish pre-War thoroughbred. Cette voiture a couru la Targa Abruzzo en 1934, et remporta la classe Turismo avant d'être livrée au Baron. Le moteur fut commandé avec les spécifications Gran Turismo, à savoir entre autres des soupapes plus larges et selon son propriétaire donne une accélération phénoménale. L'intérieur propose des sièges avant individuels, de la place pour trois passagers à l'arrière, un nécessaire de maquillage encastré dans le fauteuil avant avec notamment un petite lampe en argent. Les quatre portières sans montant central et les garnitures en placage de bois représentent la griffe du carrossier Touring. Le volant de couleur bleu est assorti à la voiture. Le Baron conserva la voiture jusque dans les années 70 où elle fut acquise par un collectionneur italien qui en entreprit sa restauration. Le moteur fut confié au spécialiste Luigi Bonfanti et le reste fut accompli par le propriétaire avant d'être acheté par l'actuel propriétaire lors de la vente Brooks, en 2000 au Nürburgring. Depuis sa restauration, la voiture a parcouru 3'500 km et a été exposée au Concours d'Elegance de la Villa d'Este. Elle sera livrée avec des papiers d'immatriculation italiens, une homologation ASI (plus grande distinction - plaque en or). Figurant dans le livre Touring d'Angelo Tito Anselmi, ce superbe modèle d'avant-guerre est d'un grand intérêt historique. Estimate: €180,000 to 230,000 (CHF290,000-370,000)
