Pendant ce temps, les ventes de la MG T fondaient à vue d’œil. Il était donc urgent de renouveler la gamme et de trouver un nouveau fer de lance pour la marque à l’hexagone. C’est alors que Sydney Enever prit la tête des opérations de développement chez MG. Avec un coup d’œil dans le rétro, il prit conscience que la nouvelle MG devait ressembler au prototype UMG 400 qu’il conçut pour les 24 Heures du Mans 1951 et 1952 sur une base de MG TD. Effectivement, la carrosserie de cette auto de course était particulièrement propice à habiller un petit roadster britannique des années 1950. Ainsi, naquît en l’espace d’une dizaine de mois, la MG A. Certes, elle ne progressait que peu en matière de technologie par rapport à sa devancière déjà datée, mais son look de XK120 miniature lui permit un franc succès à travers le monde et notamment aux Etats-Unis. L’exemplaire que nous proposons à la vente fait d’ailleurs partie de ces nombreuses MG A à avoir été exportées aux Etats-Unis. Datée du premier millésime, elle est donc motorisée par le quatre cylindres culbuté de 1489 cm3, le tout étant freiné par quatre tambours. Restauré, ce sympathique roadster arbore une teinte noir brillant assortie à un intérieur en cuir beige. Si la peinture accuse quelques légers défauts, le châssis, la mécanique et l’intérieur présentent particulièrement bien. Prête à prendre la route, elle sera fournie avec ses papiers américains, ses documents d’importation ainsi que son certificat FFVE.
