1960 CHEVROLET Corvette C1 Châssis n° 00867s1011874 La Chevrolet Corvette a été lancée le 30 juin 1953 à Flint, dans le Michigan. Un prototype aux lignes strictement identiques avait par ailleurs été présenté au début de l'année 1953 au Motorama GM, dans l'hôtel Waldorf Astoria de New York. Le nom Corvette fut trouvé par Myron Scott, alors photographe en chef de Chevrolet. Le logo original de la Corvette représentait le drapeau américain entremêlé avec un drapeau contenant l'insigne de Chevrolet et une fleur de lys. La marque américaine cherchait un nouveau symbole pour la Corvette. Voulant s'inspirer des origines françaises du nom français de Louis Chevrolet, c'est un symbole français qu'ils prirent, la fleur de Lys : symbole de la royauté, mais aussi de pureté et de paix ! Le drapeau américain fut rapidement échangé pour un drapeau à damier, car il est interdit aux États-Unis d'utiliser la bannière étoilée à des fins commerciales ! Au fil des générations, très peu de changements furent apportés au logo, le drapeau à damier passant parfois à droite… La première Corvette comportait déjà de nombreuses innovations : c'était la première voiture de série dont les lignes étaient directement issues d'un concept-car, et surtout, c'était la première voiture de série à posséder une carrosserie en fibre de verre. Forte d'un succès jamais démenti, la Corvette s'est déclinée au fil du temps en divers modèles ; elle en est actuellement à la sixième génération. Ces modèles sont répertoriés de C1 à C6. La première Corvette, dénommée Straight-axle par les initiés, reste indissociable de l'image de l'Amérique des années 1950. Le premier exemplaire est construit le 30 juin 1953, il est de couleur polo white et son intérieur est rouge. Il s'agit d'un petit roadster deux places en fibre de verre, doté d'un Moteur à 6 cylindres en ligne Chevrolet de 150 CV baptisé Blue Flame et d'une boîte automatique à deux rapports. Son Moteur peu performant est son point faible. En 1956 le 6 cylindres en ligne est remplacé par le V8 de 4,3l qui évoluera jusqu'à 5,3l (327 ci) pour 360ch. La C1 est incontestablement devenue une voiture de collection emblématique, surtout en Europe, où elle est relativement rare. Elle se caractérise par son style flamboyant cher à Harley Earl, le charismatique patron du style de la General Motors, l' Art and Colour Studio. La ligne assez tourmentée de la troisième génération, l'abondance des chromes, les doubles phares inaugurés en 1958 — comme sur l'ensemble de la production américaine —, et les prises d'air postiches confèrent à la voiture une élégance et un charme. Sa large silhouette constitue l'une des spécificités de la Corvette. Pour donner du dynamisme au profil et alléger le ponton un peu lourd de la première génération, les flancs ont été creusés en 1956 en épousant la forme d'une flamme concave. La bichromie ajoute encore à l'élan du style, un trait original qui caractérisera la Corvette jusqu'en 1961. Sa planche de bord futuriste, son pare-brise panoramique et ses lève-vitres électriques installés en 1957 participent au charme inimitable de la Corvette ainsi qu'à un exotisme yankee qui a tant fait rêver les Européens des fifties.
