Tout en reprenant certains traits caractéristiques de la 300 SL, comme la calandre, cette nouvelle Mercedes de grand tourisme offre une ligne extrêmement élégante qui mêle sportivité et finesse. Elle est équipée d'un moteur 1,9 litres discret et endurant, l'intérieur étant traité avec grand soin : planche de bord en tôle peinte avec équipement très complet, sièges profonds, capote hermétique. Very powerful, the car drew the attention of successful American imported Max Hoffman, who saw potential in a street legal version of this car for the American market and convinced the factory to develop one. Two years later, at the New York Motor Show, the Mercedes stand featured two brand new cars: the 300 SL Coupe gullwing on the one hand, and the prototype 190 SL, on the other. Based on a shortened saloon platform of the 180, the 190 SL featured running gear and suspension, including the Independent set up with coil springs, suggesting comfort. The following year, in 1955, at the Geneva Motor Show the definitive version was showcased. While retaining some features of the 300 SL, such as the grille, the new Mercedes grand tourer offered an extremely elegant line that combined sportiness and elegance. Powered by a 1.9-litres petrol engine that was discrete and enduring, the inside of the car was designed with great care: the dashboard was painted metal with full instrumentation, comfortable deep seats, proper hood sealing, etc. This model then saw a discrete and luxurious career, to the delight of drivers who appreciated comfort and refinement. Delivered new in Switzerland, the car on offer was purchased in 2003 by its current owner. The car received a complete restoration.
