1967 Oldsmobile Toronado Hardtop Deluxe Carte grise française Châssis n° 396877M603138 - Une des Oldsmobile les plus convoitées - Rare traction avant américaine, étonnant comportement routier - Ligne époustouflante, la première de la lignée Le projet d'une Oldsmobile à traction avant avait vu le jour en 1954 sous la forme d'un prototype utilitaire mais ce sera en octobre 1965 que sera dévoilée au salon de Paris : La Toronado. Dessinée par David North, sous la férule de Bill Mitchell, responsable du style chez General Motors, défraya la chronique en étant même élue voiture de l'année 1966 par le magazine américain Motor Trend. Elle s'inscrit dans le concept nommé Personal Luxury Car, dédié aux séniors argentés plutôt friands de Ford Thunderbird. Elle empreinte la plateforme de la Buick Riviera et ses géniteurs n'ont pas manqué de faire un clin d'œil à la marque Cord, une des marques américaine pionnières en matière de traction avant, par l'emploi de jantes à claires-voies, de phares escamotables et d'une calandre à barres horizontales. Oldsmobile avait présenté dès 1948 plusieurs voitures de rêve dans les Motorama et autres salons automobiles dont l'Oldsmobile 98 Futuramic qui restera un jalon dans le design automobile outre atlantique. Les ingénieurs mécaniciens n'étaient pas en reste, car ils avaient développé le premier V8 haute performance, le Rocket de 4.9 litre qui permit à Oldsmobile de remporter au général, la première édition de la Carrera Panamericana. La firme a aussi été la première à proposer des boîtes de vitesses automatiques dès 1937, puis en 1940, avec l'indestructible boîte Hydramatic. La voiture de la vente vient du Canada et sa plaque de châssis nous indique que sa couleur est ''Antique Pewter'' (étain) assorti à un intérieur en tissus noir et qu'elle bénéficie de la finition ''Deluxe''. Elle est donc équipée de toutes les options disponibles au catalogue et de son charmant compteur de vitesse à rouleau horizontal. Cette Toronado, demeure la traction avant de grande série la plus puissante. Designed by David North, under the direction of Bill Mitchell, head of styling at General Motors, it was the talk of the town and was even voted Car of the Year 1966 by the American magazine Motor Trend. It was part of the Personal Luxury Car concept. It was based on the Buick Riviera platform and its creators did not fail to make a nod to the Cord brand, one of the American pioneers in front-wheel drive, by using louvered rims, retractable headlights and a grille with horizontal bars. Oldsmobile had already presented several dream cars at the Motorama and other car shows in 1948, including the Oldsmobile 98 Futuramic, which was a milestone in American car design. The mechanical engineers had developed the first high performance V8, the 4.9 litre Rocket, which enabled Oldsmobile to win the first edition of the Carrera Panamericana. The company was also the first to offer automatic transmissions as early as 1937, then in 1940, with the indestructible Hydramatic gearbox. The car for sale comes from Canada and its chassis plate indicates that its colour is "Antique Pewter" with a black cloth interior and that it features "Deluxe" finish. It is therefore equipped with all the options available in the catalogue and its charming horizontal roller speedometer. This Toronado, remains the most powerful mass-produced front-wheel drive.
