Très homogène et dotée d’une vraie personnalité, la 420 apparaît équilibrée, tempérée, mais surtout élégante. Sous le capot, c’est le groupe 4,2 litres qui propulse la berline de luxe. L’un des points forts de la 420 est également son freinage, plus performant que la type S. Bernard Viart dans son excellent ouvrage « Jaguar Berlines et Tradition » décrit la 420 : « Sur la route, la 420 est brillante, rapide, nerveuse et elle laisse loin derrière la Mark II 3,4 et la 3,8 litres S au plan des accélérations jusqu’à 160 km/h ». Luxueuse et confortable, Jaguar veut à l’époque, s’implanter davantage dans le domaine de la berline statutaire avec une importante réserve de puissance sous le pied droit. Fort de son passé sportif et de ses victoires en compétition dans les années 1950 et 1960, la firme au félin pense faire fort avec sa MK X et augure un succès quasiment égal à celui de la Type-E. Malgré cela, la berline fut assez rapidement boudée voire sous-coté par une majeure partie de leur clientèle qui préféra se tourner du côté des Bentley et autres Rolls-Royce. Livrée neuve par Royal Elysée en France, cette Jaguar 420 fut immatriculée pour la première fois en 1968. Esthétiquement, la berline en impose avec sa calandre plongeante et ses hanches sculptées ; la promesse faite par la marque d’une voiture statutaire et bondissante telle un félin sur sa proie est tenue. Arborant une peinture bleu marine avec un fin liseré ocre sur la carrosserie, la voiture nous dévoile une assez belle patine montrant une peinture de qualité réalisée il y a quelques années. C’est à l’intérieur que la 420 s’apprécie ; en effet, l’intégralité de la sellerie en cuir couleur sable fut refait récemment et donne énormément de cachet à la voiture. Les très grands sièges avant séparés par un accoudoir central sont d’un confort rare démontrant que le Jaguar a bien tenté de chasser sur le terrain de la Rolls-Royce. L’instrumentation est dans la veine de ce que faisait la firme sur la Type-E notamment ; le compteur et le compte-tour font face au conducteur tandis que les cadrans de pression d’huile, de température d’eau et la jauge à essence trônent au milieu du tableau de bord en bois vernis qui est encore d’assez bonne fraicheur. Au milieu de la console centrale se tient le pommeau en bakélite de boite de vitesse. Mécaniquement, le 6 cylindres en ligne de 4,2L semble correctement tourner. Notre exemplaire a fait l’objet de travaux de réfection récents. La sellerie des sièges a été changée pour 4500 euros. Un pot complet en inox a été monté en 2017. Ni le moteur ni la boite ne présente de défaut d’étanchéité ce qui est rare pour une Anglaise. Choisir une Jaguar 420 c’est avant tout apprécier le confort de conduite avec un moteur noble que l’on ressent lorsque notre pied droit écrase la pédale d’accélération. Avec un prix aujourd’hui au plus bas, la 420 est surement un investissement pour le futur. Very consistent and with a real personality, the 420 appears balanced, tempered, but above all elegant. Under the bonnet, the 4.2-litre engine powers the luxury saloon. One of the 420's strong points is also its braking system, which is more efficient than the S-type. Bernard Viart in his excellent book "Jaguar Sedans and Tradition" describes the 420: "On the road, the 420 is brilliant, fast, responsive and leaves the Mark II 3.4 and 3.8 litre S far behind in terms of acceleration to 100mph". Luxurious and comfortable, Jaguar wanted to move further into the realm of the status sedan with a significant reserve of power under the right foot. With its sporting past and its victories in competition in the 1950s and 1960s, the feline firm thought it was going to do well with its MK X, and it was almost as successful as the E-type. Despite this, the saloon was quickly dismissed or even undercut by a large part of their clientele, who preferred to turn to Bentleys and Rolls-Royces. Delivered new by Royal Elysée in France, this Jaguar 420 was first registered in 1968. Aesthetically, the saloon is impressive with its plunging grille and sculpted hips; the brand's promise of a car that is both statuesque and leaps like a feline on its prey is kept. The car is painted in navy blue with a thin ochre border on the bodywork and has a rather nice patina showing a quality paint job done a few years ago. The interior is where the 420 really comes into its own; the entire sand-coloured leather upholstery was recently redone and gives the car a lot of character. The very large front seats, separated by a central armrest, are of a rare comfort, showing that Jaguar has indeed tried to chase the Rolls-Royce's territory. The instrumentation is in the vein of what the firm did on the E-Type in particular; the speedometer and rev counter face the driver while the oil pressure, water temperature and fuel gauge dials sit in the middle of the varnished wood dashboard which is still quite fresh. In the middle of the centre console stands the bakelite gear knob. Mechanically, the 4.2L inline 6-cylinder engine seems to be running well. Our car has been recently refurbished. The seat upholstery has been changed for 4500 euros. A complete stainless steel pot was fitted in 2017. Neither the engine nor the gearbox has any leakage, which is rare for an English car. Choosing a Jaguar 420 is above all appreciating the driving comfort with a noble engine that you feel when your right foot mashes the accelerator pedal. With the price now at its lowest, the 420 is surely an investment for the future.
