A Pagoda with the perfect colour combination and the best of engines. - Auréolé du succès international de ses versions 300 SL et 190 SL, Mercedes-Benz fait sensation en dévoilant au Salon de Genève 1963 son nouveau roadster : la 230 SL. Sa ligne élégante teintée de sportivité séduit et met en exergue le talent du jeune designer français Paul Bracq. - Eu égard à son hard top au toit concave qui rappelle les monuments bouddhistes, le surnom de «Pagode » est ajouté au patronyme SL. A l'origine, elle est équipée d'office d'un moteur 6-cylindres en ligne de 2,3 l alimenté par une injection directe Bosch, pour une puissance de 150 ch et 22 mkg de couple. Côté transmission, elle était équipée de série d'une boîte mécanique à 4 rapports (5 rapports en option) ou d'une boîte automatique 4-vitesses. - Elle évoluera ensuite avec deux nouveaux moteurs, 2,5 l puis 2,8 l. Elle était l'incarnation d'une GT performante sans pour autant revendiquer le statut d'une vraie sportive. De plus, son habitabilité de premier ordre, et la qualité de finition sont surprenants pour l'époque. - L'exemplaire qui nous intéresse est une 280 SL, en boîte automatique (récemment révisée). Il présente par ailleurs l'avantage d'être équipé de sa radio Becker d'époque, d'avoir la fameuse troisième place arrière optionnelle, et son hard-top matching numbers. - En 2017, la voiture a été accidentée dans un parking et a bénéficié de plus de 35 000 € de travaux, avec notamment un changement de longeron et un passage au marbre. Elle est aujourd'hui en très bel état de présentation, avec sa carrosserie gris métallisé foncé, et son intérieur, comme sa capote, rouges ; une superbe combinaison de couleurs. Merci de noter par ailleurs que le moteur n'est pas matching, mais issu d'une berline 280, et conforme, et que nous avons relevé quelques traces de rouille de surface lors de notre examen, notamment sur les soubassements. - Basking in the international success of its 300 SL and 190 SL versions, Mercedes-Benz caused a sensation by unveiling its new roadster at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show: the 230 SL. Originally, it was equipped as standard with a 2.3-litre inline 6-cylinder engine fed by Bosch direct injection, delivering 150 hp and 22 mkg of torque. On the transmission side, it came standard with a 4-speed manual gearbox (5-speed optional) or a 4-speed automatic transmission. - It later evolved with two new engines, 2.5-litre then 2.8-litre. It was the embodiment of a high-performance GT without claiming the status of a true sports car. Moreover, its first-class habitability and quality of finish were surprising for the era. - The example that interests us is a 280 SL with automatic transmission (recently overhauled). It also has the advantage of being equipped with its period Becker radio, having the famous optional third rear seat, and its matching numbers hard-top. - In 2017, the car was damaged in a car park and benefited from more than €35,000 worth of work, including a sill replacement and body alignment. It is now in very fine presentation condition, with its dark metallic grey bodywork and its interior, like its soft top, in red; a superb colour combination. Please note that the engine is not matching, but comes from a 280 saloon and is correct, and that we noted some surface rust traces during our examination, particularly on the undercarriage.
