Maserati se devait de réagir en proposant un modèle actualisé, plus moderne. Il a fallu attendre 1971 puisque ce n'est qu'au salon de Genève qu'est révélée la première Maserati de route à moteur central arrière, la Bora. Stricte deux places, elle a vocation à prendre la suite de la Ghibli. Portant le nom d'un vent du Nord qui souffle sur l'Adriatique, la Bora est due au talent de Giorgietto Giugiaro, alors à la tête de sa propre entreprise, Italdesign, fondée en 1967. Une fois de plus, le maître a réussi une création magnifique. Synthèse d'un style plus anguleux, bien que n'excluant pas les lignes galbées, et d'exigences aérodynamiques, la Bora doit être considérée comme l'une des plus belles GT italiennes de la grande époque. Sa silhouette trapue en forme d'obus fait de la Bora une voiture sauvage. Encore plus basse que la Ghibli (1,13 mètre), elle est habillée d'une carrosserie aux porte-à-faux réduits qui en accentuent l'esthétique ramassée. Très courte, la carrosserie autoportante ne mesure que 4,33 mètres malgré un long empattement de 2,60 mètres. Immense lunette arrière presque horizontale tombant sur un arrière tronqué, pavillon traité en inox, phares escamotables et étranges enjoliveurs de roues lisses, tout concourt à l'impression de fauve insoumis que dégage la Bora. Giorgietto Giugiaro propose en 1971 une interprétation futuriste de la Bora, la Boomerang. On ne peut qu'admirer le futurisme épuré de ce magnifique exercice de style, caractérisé par son profil exceptionnel - la proue raccordée au pavillon par un plan unique englobant le pare-brise et la ligne du capot. Cette sculpture roulante est opérationnelle et fait le bonheur d'un collectionneur français. La Bora est ainsi la Première Maserati de route ainsi équipée (moteur AR), elle est, du point de vue technologique, la plus moderne des GT au trident. Seuls 495 exemplaires ont été produits, dont 235 à moteur cinq litres. Le modèle présenté est donc un 5L de 300 CV. La mécanique a été révisée et la carrosserie a été restaurée et la peinture est neuve.
