D'abord, elle renoue avec la tradition des petites berlinettes (le B de GTB), abandonnée avec l'arrêt de la 246 GT. Ensuite, elle reprend le V8 de 3 litres déjà vu sur la 308 GT4, un moteur noble à carter sec et commande de distribution par courroie crantée, technique alors peu commune. Par ailleurs, elle bénéficie de la signature de Pininfarina pour dessin magistral, intégrant les traits de la 246 GT dans une ligne plus moderne. Enfin, pour en limiter le poids, elle reçoit une carrosserie en polyester, une grande première pour une Ferrari de route. Accusant à peine plus d'une tonne, elle dépasse 250 km/h et son agilité la rend difficile à suivre. Malheureusement, le coût de fabrication incitera Ferrari à revenir dès le courant de l'année 1977 à une carrosserie acier. Du coup, la 308 GTB va s'alourdir de près de 300 kg et perdre une partie du brio de sa devancière. La version polyester, dont la production s'est limitée à 712 exemplaires, est évidemment la plus désirable de toute la série, d'autant que la qualité de finition de sa carrosserie ne permet guère de la distinguer à l'œil nu de sa sœur en acier. Vendue neuve en France par Charles Pozzi et immatriculée pour la première fois le 13 janvier 1977, cette superbe Ferrari 308 polyester n'a connu que des mains soigneuses et rigoureuses. Dès 1990, un rapport d'expertise nous apprend qu'elle a bénéficié d'une restauration complète et qu'elle ne présente aucune déformation ni séquelle de réparation. Elle appartient alors à M. Laurent Philippe demeurant au Domptin, dans l'Aisne. En 2000, le propriétaire actuel, un homme d'affaires franco-suisse, en fait l'acquisition et la confie aux ateliers Pennequin, à Magny-Cours (aujourd'hui Sodemo Vintage) pour une réfection du moteur. Les factures d'avril 2002 fournissent le détail de la remise en état du V8 et de ses accessoires. Ainsi, la voiture a été entièrement reconditionnée, fiabilisée et dotée d'un échappement hautes performances. Le moteur démarre au premier tour de clef et les accélérations sont impressionnantes et très proches de celles d'une 308 Gr. 4. Une sonorité mélodieuse, des montées en régime spectaculaires, une maniabilité hors pair, un habitacle soigné, une ligne élancée, cette 308 GTB polyester offre toutes les qualités d'une grande Ferrari. Firstly, it revived the tradition of small berlinettas (the B in GTB), which had come to an end when production of the 246 GT ceased. It employed the 3-litre V8 already seen on the 308 GT4, in an impressive dry sump form using a cam belt for the first time. Moreover, the car had been designed by Pininfarina, integrating features on the 246 GT with a more modern styling. Finally, to keep the weight down, fibreglass was used for the body, a first for a road-going Ferrari. Weighing little more than a tonne, this agile car was capable of more than 250 km/h, making it hard to keep up with. Unfortunately high build costs compelled Ferrari to return to the steel bodies from 1977, the year of the car on offer. Immediately, the 308 GTB became heavier by 300 kg and lost some of its predecessor's brilliance. Just 712 examples of the fibreglass version were built, making it the most sought-after of the whole series, especially as the bodywork is finished to such a high standard that it is almost impossible, by eye, to tell them apart from the steel-bodied cars. Sold new in France by Charles Pozzi, and registered initially on 13 January 1977, this superb fibreglass Ferrari 308 has always been fastidiously maintained. An inspection report from 1990 tells us that it has been comprehensively restored and showed no distortion or signs of repair. At that time it belonged to M. Laurent Philippe, who lived in Domptin, Aisne. In 2000, the current owner, a French-Swiss businessman, bought the car and gave it to the Pennequin workshop in Magny-Cour (Sodemo Vintage today), to re-build the engine. Bills from April 2002 provide details of work carried out on the V8 engine and its accessories. The car has therefore been completely overhauled and has been fitted with a high-performance exhaust. The engine starts with the first turn of the key, and it accelerates like a 308 Gr 4 car. A wonderful sound, spectacular through the gears, unbeatable handling, immaculate interior, svelte styling, this fibreglass 308 GTB has all the ingredients of a 'big' Ferrari.
