Parmi les Bimota YB3 construites, une dizaine fut réservée aux pilotes officiels Bimota : Jon Ekerold, Randy Mamola, Eric Saul, Patrick Fernandez et Michel Rougerie. Patrick Fernandez obtiendra le titre de vice-champion du monde 350 en 1979. En 1980, Jon Ekerold deviendra pilote 350 champion du monde et offrira à Bimota le titre constructeur. Il s’agit aujourd’hui d’un exemplaire ayant appartenu au célèbre pilote Eric Saul. Une lettre de sa part datant de Novembre 2015 atteste qu’il s’agit bien de la moto qu’il pilotait lors du championnat du monde de 1980. A son guidon il fut en bagarre au Grand Prix d’Italie avec Jon Ekerold qui finit champion du monde cette année-là ! La YB3 est la dernière évolution des Bimota GP. Son moteur, sur base de Yamaha TZ 350, a été retravaillé par l’ingénieur Giotta Bizzarini : 80 CV à 10000 tr/mn, cylindres à 6 transferts et carburateurs de 38 mm power jets. La partie cycle porte la signature de Massimo Tamburini, le fondateur de Bimota. Il avait concentré tous ses efforts sur le poids : la moto ne pèse que 98 kg et son cadre seulement 6 kg. Chaque détail de cette moto a été pensé pour la course, pour offrir une efficacité maximale et une précision absolue. Tous les composants sont le must de l’époque : le cadre double berceau est réalisé en tubes Columbus au chrome molybdène pressurisé, les roues sont des Campagnolo magnésium, les freins des Brembo série OR, la fourche Marzocchi Grand Prix, la suspension arrière de type cantilever en aluminium, le carénage profilé ultra-léger, etc. La Bimota YB3, fabriquée à moins de 20 exemplaires, est une moto idéale pour courir le championnat ICGP et envisager d’excellents résultats.
