En 1979, Chris Hahn et Peter Engel créent la société Styling-Garage (SGS) et se lancent dans la carrosserie et la préparation de véhicules d'exception pour de riches clients comprenant notamment des célébrités américaines, des hommes d'affaires japonais ou des Chefs d'Etat africain. Mais SGS acquit ses lettres de noblesse grâce à ses clients les plus prestigieux et sans limite, comme le Sultan de Brunei ou encore Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan d'Abu Dhabi, plus connu sous le nom de 'Rainbow Sheik', qui passa commande de 40 Mercedes classe S converties en limousines de toutes les couleurs de l'arc-en-ciel pour son mariage. En plus des limousines et autres versions découvrables, SGS innove en présentant le premier concept de portes Gullwing sur une SEC dès 1982, en hommage à la 300 SL de 1955. Baptisé 500 SGS Gullwing, ce sensationnel coupé était basé sur la 500 SEC, ayant bénéficié de renforts au niveau du toit et les seuils de porte pour renforcer l'ensemble. Cette opération coûtait le prix d'une 500 SEC neuve. Chris Hahn nous a confirmé que l'exemplaire que nous présentons fait bien parti des 57 exemplaires produits et des quelques rares, livrés neufs via son showroom de Beverly Hills, équipés des jantes et des éléments de carrosserie AMG d'origine. Sa combinaison de couleur est époustouflante, l'extérieur s'accordant parfaitement avec son intérieur cuir havane clair. Cette sensationnelle création proposée ici incarne à elle seule un hommage à la légendaire 300 SL papillon de 1955, au concept C111, une ode à la liberté et à l'insouciance des années 80 et, doté de ses rares spécificités AMG, elle représente le summum du sex-appeal des années 80 ! In 1979, Chris Hahn and Peter Engel set up Styling Garage (SGS), tuning and producing modified bodywork for high-end cars which they sold to rich clients including American celebrities, Japanese businessmen and African heads of state. But SGS made its reputation thanks to its most prestigious customers with unlimited means, such as the Sultan of Brunei or Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, better known as the 'Rainbow Sheik', who ordered 40 S-Class Mercedes converted into limousines and painted in all the colours of the rainbow for his wedding. As well as its limousines and convertible models, SGS broke new ground when it showed the first Gullwing-door concept on an SEC in 1982, as a tribute to the 300 SL from 1955. Christened the 500 SGS Gullwing, this sensational coupé was based on the 500 SEC with additional strengthening of the roof and sills to reinforce its structure. The operation cost as much as a new 500 SEC. Chris Hahn confirmed that this example is one of the 57 produced and was one of the few cars supplied new through SGS' Californian showroom in Beverly Hills equipped with an original AMG bodykit and wheels. The combination of colours is quite stunning, the exterior perfectly matching its light tobacco brown leather interior.
