C’est là les prémices du projet 822, ce projet qui deviendra, en petite série, la Renault R5 Turbo. L’objectif: homologuer la R5 pour l’exigeante catégorie Groupe 4. Signée Marc Deschamps et Marcello Gandini, la carrosserie de la Turbo se voulait extrême et fit sensation en 1978 lorsqu’elle était dévoilée au Salon de Paris. Produite jusqu’en septembre 1982, la R5 Turbo première du nom laisse place à la Turbo 2. Ainsi, la R5 Turbo se pare de teintes de carrosserie et d’intérieur plus sobres, de même que les boucliers abandonnent les bleu et rouge criards au profit d’un noir plus classique. Par la même occasion, la R5 Turbo perd son intérieur signé Bertone pour celui de la R5 Alpine Turbo, ce, pour des raisons d’économies. Bien qu’elle prenne 30kg par l’abandon de l’aluminium pour le toit et les portières, la R5 Turbo 2 garde la mécanique de sa devancière, soit : un 4 cylindres 1.4L alimenté par un Turbocompresseur Garett T3 et nourrit par une injection mécanique Bosch K-Jetronic, le tout délivrant 160 chevaux 6000 tr/ mn pour un poids ne dépassant pas la tonne. Peinte dans un élégant bordeaux métallique assorti à un habitacle beige, cette R5 Turbo 2 présente particulièrement bien. Avec 66086 kilomètres au compteur, elle démarre et roule sans problème. Si la peinture ne présente aucun défaut, l’intérieur nécessiterait la correction de quelques détails strictement esthétiques.
