Compacte, racé, abordable et alimenté par un moteur avant, le Z3 remplit tous les critères d’un roadster réussi. La firme Bavaroise nous rappelle ici son histoire avec un clin d’œil au cabriolet 507, initié quelques années plus tôt avec le Z1. BMW avait pour ambition celle de séduire le marché américain avec son Z3, les lignes d’assemblage seront donc implantées en Caroline-du-Sud. Le Z3 sera disponible dès 1996, d’abord aux USA puis en Europe. Ce modèle sera dès ses débuts un franc succès commercial, à tel point que BMW dut rapidement imposer un délai de livraison de 6 mois à ses clients. A noter que le succès du Z3 fut également immédiat grâce à un merveilleux coup de publicité au cinéma. Présenté en 1995 dans GoldenEye, James Bond y quittait son habituel Aston Martin pour se mettre au volant d’un roadster allemand, mais pas des moindres : le Z3 dans sa version 1.8 litre. Pour sa version M, le Z3 arbore une préparation moteur et esthétique digne d’une cure de stéroïdes. Des passages de roues arrière élargies jusqu’au bouclier avant retravaillé, en passant par 4 sorties d’échappement et des jantes 17’ : le roadster Z3 M démontre dès sa sortie la maitrise du département Motorsport. Côté habitacle, le Z3 M se pare d’un intérieur mettant en exergue le luxe et la sportivité du roadster. On y retrouve les éléments classiques des BMW de cette générations, du cuir à profusion, des sièges baquets réglables électriquement et une haute qualité de finitions. Quant à la sportivité, elle nous est évidement rappelée par les inserts M sur les compteurs, les bas de portes, le volant et le pommeau de vitesse de la boite courte. Cerclés de chrome, les compteurs viennent souligner le caractère méchant (nerveux) de l’auto ; un compte-tours allant jusqu’à 8 000 tr/mn, un compteur de vitesse plafonné à 280 km/h et 3 nanomètres en dessous de l’autoradio (horloge, température extérieure et température d’huile). La motorisation du Z3 M ne laissera personne indifférent. Paré du 6 cylindres en ligne de la M3 E36, la phase 1 du roadster ne développait pas moins de 321 cv à 7 400 tr/mn. De quoi propulser les 1 410 kg du roadster dans des accélérations fulgurantes, avec un 0 à 100 km/h effectué en seulement 5,5 secondes. Le tout accompagné d’une symphonie envoutante et ce avec une consommation proche du raisonnable : 11,1 litres au 100 en conduite mixte. Le modèle que nous présentons est un Z3 M roadster première génération, livré neuf en France en juillet 1997 avec sa boite de vitesse manuelle 5 rapports « M Shift Tech » et son L6 de 3201 cm3. Paré d’une peinture gris métallisé « Arktissilber », d’une capote noire et d’un intérieur en cuir également noir, notre coupé cabriolet affiche avec discrétion le poids des années ; les cuirs toujours tendus et l’habitacle en bel état de conservation. Nous soulignons néanmoins un léger trou de cigarette sur le cuir du siège conducteur, en corrélation avec l’option « version fumeur » dont est doté notre modèle. Quant à la peinture, elle fut récemment refaite, ce qui nous permet de présenter ce modèle iconique dans une agréable fraicheur de conservation. Achetée en 2003 par le propriétaire, notre exemplaire est accompagné d’un historique limpide autant sur son kilométrage que sur son entretien. Notre essai routier a démontré un bon fonctionnement général du véhicule, la puissance promise à l’époque par BMW semble ne rien avoir perdu de sa superbe. Il en va de même pour la fluidité de la boite courte qui promet des sensations loin de l’aseptisation moderne. Compact, stylish, affordable and powered by a front engine, the Z3 fulfils all the criteria of a successful roadster. The Bavarian firm reminds us of its history with a nod to the 507 convertible, initiated a few years earlier with the Z1. BMW's ambition was to seduce the American market with its Z3, so the assembly lines were located in South Carolina. The Z3 was available from 1996, first in the USA and then in Europe. This model was a commercial success from the start, so much so that BMW quickly had to impose a 6-month delivery period on its customers. The success of the Z3 was also immediate thanks to a wonderful publicity stunt in the cinema. In the 1995 film GoldenEye, James Bond left his usual Aston Martin and got behind the wheel of a German roadster, but not the least: the Z3 in its 1.8 litre version. For its M version, the Z3 has been given an engine and styling treatment worthy of a steroid treatment. From the widened rear wheel arches to the reworked front bumper, via 4 exhaust outlets and 17' rims: the Z3 M roadster demonstrates the mastery of the Motorsport department right from the start. The interior of the Z3 M emphasises the luxury and sportiness of the roadster. The interior features the classic BMW elements of this generation, with plenty of leather, electrically adjustable bucket seats and a high quality finish. As for the sportiness, it is obviously reminded by the M inserts on the meters, the door sills, the steering wheel and the gear knob of the short gearbox. The chrome-rimmed meters underline the car's mean (nervous) character; a tachometer that goes up to 8,000 rpm, a speedometer capped at 280 km/h and 3 nanometres below the car radio (clock, outside temperature and oil temperature). The engine of the Z3 M will not leave anyone indifferent. Equipped with the 6-cylinder in-line engine of the M3 E36, the first phase of the roadster developed no less than 321 hp at 7,400 rpm. This was enough to propel the 1,410 kg roadster into lightning acceleration, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of only 5.5 seconds. All of this is accompanied by a bewitching symphony, with fuel consumption close to reasonable: 11.1 litres per 100 km in mixed driving. The model we present is a first generation Z3 M roadster, delivered new in France in July 1997 with its 5-speed manual gearbox "M Shift Tech" and its L6 of 3201 cm3. Adorned with a grey metallic "Arktissilber" paint job, a black soft top and a black leather interior, our coupé cabriolet discreetly displays the weight of the years; the leathers are still tight and the interior is in a good state of preservation. However, we would like to point out that there is a slight cigarette hole on the driver's seat leather, which correlates with the "smoker's version" option that our model has. As for the paintwork, it was recently redone, which allows us to present this iconic model in a pleasantly fresh state of preservation. Purchased in 2003 by the owner, our example comes with a clear history of both mileage and maintenance. Our test drive showed the car to be in good working order and the power promised at the time by BMW seems to have lost none of its superbness. The same goes for the smoothness of the short gearbox, which promises a feeling far from the modern asepticism.
