A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF A PANCHEN LAMA
TIBET, 18TH CENTURY
西藏 十八世紀 銅鎏金班禪喇嘛像
Provenance:
With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s
The prominent ears and shape of the head are somewhat reminiscent of the Fifth Panchen Lama, Deshin Shenpa (see Bonhams, New York, 14 March 2017, lot 3243), however, the flattened pandita hat is not common to his portraits. Portraits with pandita hats turned to the side and animal skin-covered thrones are features shared by two unidentified bronzes who also hold a pot, one in the Ashmolean Museum (EA2006.72) and another in the Halpert Collection (Bonhams, 21 March 2023, lot 502). Also see another lama wearing a similarly styled flat pandita hat sold at Sotheby's, New York, 19 March 2016, lot 1339.
