Lot 201
201. A SMALL GOLD RÉPOUSSÉ FIGURE OF BUDDHA
Thaïlande, 14th/15th century
10 cm (4 in.) high
Provenance:
A German private collection.
The style of this small Buddha figure is representative of the last period of Khmer art in 9th-15th century, known as the Lopburi style, which combines characteristics of both Cambodian and Thai sculptural schools. Statues made of pure gold, dating back to this era, are rare. Compare a closely related gold repoussé Buddha of the same small size, dated before 1424 in the Cleveland Museum of Art (1999.316).
This lot comes with a letter from Tassilo Adam (1978-1955), dated 7 March 1941.
