Catalogued several times in the 20th century as an important drawing by Rembrandt, possibly depicting Hendrikje Stoffels, the artist's companion after the death of his wife Saskia, this drawing is no longer considered to be autograph by current Rembrandt scholars. Peter Schatborn, to whom we are grateful for his help in writing this entry, attributes it to Willem Drost, a pupil of Rembrandt in the 1650s. The simplification of the figures, the rarely if ever continuous outline lines, the varied hatching in several directions and the fine washes are particularly characteristic of Drost's style. The drawing can closely be compared to a sheet in the British Museum of a Sleeping Young Man (P. Schatborn, cat. exp. Old Drawings, New Names. Rembrandt and His Contemporaries, Amsterdam, The Rembrandt House Museum, 2014, p. 45 fig. 7b); a full-length Portrait of Rembrandt (idem, no. 8, repr.); and a Hurdy-Gurdy Player with a Young Singer in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, 1980, vol. III, no. 559b).
