Two French artist's from Metz were associated with the pseudonym Monsù Desiderio: Didier Barra and François de Nomé. Both artists moved to Italy at the beginning of 1600, first living in Rome and then Naples, where it is believed they shared a studio. Their works, which often depict architectural fantasies and imaginary scenes with loose, lively brushstrokes, are often confused.
It is likely that the figures in the present painting are by Agostino Tassi (1580-1644), with whom François de Nomé is known to have collaborated with.
