En l'absence de documents prouvant cette donation, Johnson (op. cit., vol. I, p. 27) refuse cette hypothèse et date l'œuvre de 1825, au moment du voyage de l'artiste en Angleterre, s'attachant à la description de la toile donnée par Delacroix, publiée dans l'ouvrage de Sylvestre (op. cit. : « Cheval avec un Indien (Angleterre) ». De mai à août 1825, Delacroix entreprend un voyage en Angleterre au cours duquel il remplit plusieurs carnets de dessins et de notes manuscrites. Selon Johnson (op. cit.), la figure debout serait celle d'un Indien et les accessoires et vêtements qu'il porte auraient été inspirés des objets vus dans la collection d'armes et armures de Samuel Rush Meyrick, spécialiste de l'histoire des armures européennes, qui possédait, selon l'artiste même, « la plus belle collection d'armures qui ait peut-être existé » (lettre à Théophile Thoré, 30 novembre 1861, voir P. Burty, Lettres de Eugène Delacroix (1815-1863), Paris, 1878, p. 344). Delacroix visite sa collection le 9 juillet 1825, à Cadogan Place, Londres (voir L. Johnson, dans Delacroix: an exhibition of paintings, drawings and lithographs arranged by the Arts Council of Great Britain in association with the Edinburgh Festival Society, Edinburgh, 1964, no 95 et 96). La selle posée à même le sol serait typique de Mahratta (un peuple guerrier hindou occupant le centre et le sud-ouest de l'Inde), alors que l'épée et le bouclier, et probablement la lance en bambou, auraient été inspirés par les armes portées par un mannequin vêtu de l'armure d'un Polygar (tribu du sud de l'Inde). Le cheval aurait été quant à lui inspiré de l'un de chevaux appartenant au maquignon A. Elmore, proche de l'artiste et de Géricault pendant leur séjour anglais. En 1857, Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) réalisa une gravure d'après le tableau alors dans la collection de Paul Huet (voir Metropolitan Museum, inv. 22.1.21). According to the author of the catalogue of the 1930 Louvre exhibition, Delacroix gave the present painting to Hyppolyte Poterle (1803-1835) around 1824. In the absence of documents proving this donation, Johnson (op. cit., vol. I, p. 27) rejects this hypothesis and dates the work to 1825, at the time of the artist's trip to England (Delacroix undertook a trip to England from May to August 1825, during which time he filled several notebooks with drawings and handwritten notes), relying on Delacroix's description of the painting, published in Sylvestre's work (op. cit. Cheval avec un Indien (Angleterre)). According to Johnson (op. cit.), the standing figure is that of an Indian and the accessories and clothing he is wearing were inspired by objects seen in the collection of arms and armour of Samuel Rush Meyrick, a specialist in the history of European armour and owner, according to the artist himself, of " la plus belle collection d'armures qui ait peut-être existé " (letter to Théophile Thoré, 30 November 1861, see, P. Burty, Lettres de Eugène Delacroix (1815-1863), Paris, 1878, p. 344). Delacroix visited Meyrick's collection on 9 July 1825, in Cadogan Place, London (see L. Johnson, in Delacroix: an exhibition of paintings, drawings and lithographs arranged by the Arts Council of Great Britain in association with the Edinburgh Festival Society, Edinburgh, 1964, nos. 95 and 96). The saddle on the ground is said to be typical of the Mahratta (a Hindu warrior people occupying central and south-western India), while the sword and shield, and probably the bamboo spear, are said to have been inspired by the weapons carried by a mannequin dressed in the armour of a Polygar (a tribe from southern India). The horse is said to have been inspired by one of the horses belonging to the horse dealer A. Elmore, who was close to the artist and met him and Géricault during their stay in England. In 1857, Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) made an engraving after the painting, which was in the collection of Paul Huet (see Metropolitan Museum, inv. 22.1.21).
