42. 42W PANNEAU EN RELIEF REPRÉSENTANT BOUDDHA EN SCHISTE GRIS
ANCIENNE RÉGION DU GANDHARA, IIIE/IVE SIÈCLE
52 cm (20 1/2 in.) high
A GREY SCHIST PANEL OF BUDDHA
ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 3RD/4TH CENTURY
犍陀羅 三/四世紀 片岩佛陀像
Provenance:
With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s
This panel would have likely represented the scene of the Buddha receiving the offering of the four bowls under the bodhi tree, as evidenced by the flower element by his left shoulder (Kurita, Gandhara Art, Vol. II, 2003, p. 122, no. 238).
Buddha's slightly squat proportions and broad face with large ears follow a convention favored by Gandharan art of the Swat Valley. Compare a seated Buddha in the Royal Ontario Museum that also has a band of rosettes across the base (Ibid, p. 101, no. 264). Also compare one image sold at Bonhams, New York, 19 March 2018, lot 3063 and another sold at Christie's, New York, 22 March 2011, lot 228.
