Celebrated for construction of Emperor Hadrian villa at the beginning of the 2nd century, as well as numerous temples and aqueducts, the city attracted the Grand Tourists in the 18th and 19th century fascinated by the beauty of the site and by the new archaeological discoveries that brought to light many ancient remains including Hadrian's villa.
