A Meissen lobed beaker and saucer from the Japanese Palace, circa 1728-30
Painted in Kakiemon style in iron red, sea green and blue, with some petals and carpels accentuated in gold, the saucer: 15.6 diam., the beaker: 7.1 cm high crossed swords mark in overglaze blue, incised Japanese Palace inventory numbers N=361-W to the beaker, N=374-W to the saucer to both, (2)
The 1770 Japanese Palace inventory numbers correspond to the following entries:
No. 361: "Sechs gemuschelte Chocolaten-Becher mit Blumen und Vogeln gemahlt, 3. Zoll hoch, 3 1/2 Zoll in Diam. [Six shell-shaped chocolate cups with flowers and birds, 3 inches high, 3 1/2 inches in diameter]" and No. 374: "Ein detto [runde gemuschelte Zucker-Schälgen] (mit Vögel und blumen gemahlt), 1 1/4 Zoll tief, 6 1/2 Zoll in Diam. [The same round shell-shaped sugar dish (ground with bird and flowers, 1 1/4 inches deep, 6 1/2 inches in diameter]," in Claus Boltz, "Japanisches Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769," Keramos 153 (1996): 58.
