Restée dans la famille depuis En 1868, à la fin de sa formation à l'Académie des Beaux Arts de St Petersbourg, Alexis Harlamoff reçoit une médaille d'or pour sa peinture “Le retour du fils prodigue” et une bourse d'étude lui est alors attribuée. Grâce à celle-ci, il se rend à Paris où il restera la majeure partie de sa vie. A cette époque de grande évolution dans l'art Russe et de l'avènement du Romantisme, apparait une nouvelle tendance: le Portrait. L'art intéresse alors de plus en plus la haute bourgeoisie et les artistes russes trouvent leur inspiration dans le monde qui les entoure. Ils se mettent à adopter un style très naturaliste. Harlamoff perfectionne son style en s'entrainant à copier de grands maîtres, en particulier Rembrandt et ses leçons d'anatomie. Il travaille auprès du célèbre peintre de portraits Léon Bonnat, professeur à l'École des Beaux-Arts. Sa carrière évolue rapidement et il devient un portraitiste reconnu, comptant des clients célèbres comme le Tsar Alexandre II, le Prince Demidoff - San Demato ou l'écrivain Ivan Tourguéniev. A partir de 1875, l'artiste expose régulièrement au Salon de Paris et dans les années 1980 se concentre sur les portraits d'enfants et de jeunes paysannes, prenant souvent sa fille comme modèle. Ces œuvres furent reconnues par les collectionneurs américains et européens, admirées notamment aussi par la monarchie britannique en la personne de la reine Victoria, au Salon International de Glasgow en 1888. Ces images romantiques reflètent l'innocence et la beauté des modèles, leur donnant une douceur mélancolique et parfois contemplative, gommant l'aspect joueur de l'enfance. Ce Portrait de jeune fille montre une jolie figure perdue dans ses pensées, à la maturité supérieure à son âge. Elle ne nous regarde pas mais regarde hors du cadre, ce qui créé une nostalgie certaine. La deuxième œuvre, la jeune fille au ruban rouge, est différente dans son approche : le regard direct de la fillette est adouci par l'expression innocente, complétée par les boucles retenues avec un ruban de soie et la rondeur angélique des joues roses. Le fond nu de ces deux tableaux, typique du style de l'artiste, donne une simplicité qui intensifie le réalisme du portrait et cette nudité augmente l'intimité créée avec le modèle. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Alexis Alexeievitch Harlamoff won a gold medal and a travel scholarship in 1868 for his painting “The Return of the Prodigal Son” that enabled him to go to Paris where he would spend the majority of the rest of his life. This period was marked by a great transition in the style of Russian art, and with the advent of Romaniticism, a new emphasis was placed on portraits of individuals. Moreover, as art began to spread beyond court circles, Russian artists adopted a new introspective interest in their immediate surroundings, which catalyzed a movement towards greater naturalism. Through private study, Harlamoff honed his skills by copying the works of old masters, in particular Rembrandt's Anatomy lessons, and upon his arrival in Paris, worked beside the great portrait painter and professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Leon Bonnat. Harlamoff's career evolved quickly and he became a respected portrait painter, with important sitters such as Tsar Alexander II, Prince Demidoff-San Domato and the writer Ivan Toursuéniev. The artist exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1875 and by the 1880s was concentrating on portraits of children and young peasant girls, often using his own daughter as a sitter. These portraits were greatly admired by European and American collectioners, including British royalty, notably Queen Victoria, upon her observing a portrait by the artist exhibited at the Glasgow International Exhibition in 1888. Harlamoff's romanticized portraits capture the beauty and innocence of his young sitters and evoke a certain calmness and oftentimes contemplative and melancholic nature. In the work we are presenting titled Portrait of a Young Girl, the artist portrays the sitter, who is possibly his own daughter, deep in thought, lending her a certain maturity beyond her age. She does not gaze out at the viewer, but out of the picture plane, creating a more intriguing effect than a direct stare. The artist takes a different approach in the second work, Young Girl with a Ribbon, giving a direct view on the child that is softened by an expression of innocence, complemented by her ringlets fastened with a silken ribbon and by the angelic roundness of her lightly flushed cheeks. The blank background in these two works, typical of the artist's style, evokes at the same time a certain simplicity while strengthening the realism of the portrait by eliminating all exterior distractions, therefore providing the viewer with an increased sense of intimacy with the sitter.
