A TURQUOISE-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE LAYS JAR, ZHADOU
Qianlong/Jiaqing period
Painted around the globular body with large lotus blooms and scrolls in bright enamels and outlined in gold, below a band of ruyi heads around the shoulder, the tall flared neck painted with upright leaves, all re-served on a turquoise ground, the interior enamelled turquoise.
8.1cm (3 1/4in) high.

The present spittoon refers to a group of vessels commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795) that were made in porcelain imitating cloisonné enamel. The Qianlong Emperor was particularly fond of cloisonné enamel ware, and cloisonné wares were imitated in different materials including porcelain.
