Issu d'un milieu modeste et après une formation de sculpteur sur bois, le Jardin des Plantes est pour lui la meilleure école. Il y observe longuement les animaux, tendant à reproduire tant leur physique que leur psychologie. S'il y parvient grâce au bronze, cette puissance expressive se retrouve également dans ses pastels. Guyot n'a que 21 ans en 1906 lors qu'il expose son Ours avant de présenter régulièrement ses œuvres principalement au Salon des Artistes Français, Salon des Indépendants et au Salon d'Automne. Il devient également membre du Groupe des Douze fondé par François Pompon et rassemblant Jouve et Poupelet notamment. L'œuvre de G.L Guyot, passionné d'animaux exotiques particulièrement, s'attache à libérer toute la noblesse des animaux par le biais d'un certain classicisme caractéristique de la période Art Déco.
