A LARGE HUANGHUALI 'MALLOW' BRUSHPOT
Kangxi (1662-1722)
Boldly carved in the form of a blossoming mallow flower with six large upright overlapping petals, the exterior decorated in relief with flowering prunus, begonia, magnolia, and orchids issuing from craggy rockwork.
20.5cm (8 1/8in) diam; 19.8cm (7 3/4in) high.

The design on this brushpot is very similar to a zitan brushpot in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p.24, no.23. Compare also with a huanghuali brushpot of similarly large size and shape carved with similar motifs, from the Hotung Collection, sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 9 October 2022, lot 131.
