Provenance:
With Daatselaar Fine Art & Antiques, Utrecht, where purchased by the present owner
Haaxman, a pupil of Herman ten Kate (1822-1891), attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, where he also joined Pulchri Studio. He also became a member of Arti et Amicitae, an artist society, in Amsterdam.
The present work depicts a melancholic lady, seated in a classical rotunda gazing into the distance, daydreaming. There are roses and petals scattered beside her and she holds a mandolin with broken strings. On the horizon the sun glitters on the sea.
A smaller version of the present composition, measuring 38 x 75cm, was offered at Sotheby's, London on 2 April 1998, lot 125.
