79. 79W Pieter Haaxman (La Haye 1854-1937 Haarlem) Daydreams signé 'P.HAAXMAN' (en bas à droite) signed 'P.HAAXMAN' (lower right) oil on canvas 103.5 x 201.5cm (40 3/4 x 79 5/16in). Provenance: With Daatselaar Fine Art & Antiques, Utrecht, where purchased by the present owner Haaxman, a pupil of Herman ten Kate (1822-1891), attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, where he also joined Pulchri Studio. He also became a member of Arti et Amicitae, an artist society, in Amsterdam. The present work depicts a melancholic lady, seated in a classical rotunda gazing into the distance, daydreaming. There are roses and petals scattered beside her and she holds a mandolin with broken strings. On the horizon the sun glitters on the sea. A smaller version of the present composition, measuring 38 x 75cm, was offered at Sotheby's, London on 2 April 1998, lot 125.
