Important et royal gobelet à couvercle en verre gravé, Potsdam, vers 1701-13 An impressive Potsdam Royal engraved goblet and cover, circa 1701-13 The generous round funnel bowl with the monogram 'FR' beneath a crown for King Frederick I of Prussia, the reverse with the Star of the Order of the Black Eagle, a distinctive band of large facets to the rim, the base of the bowl, lower baluster stem and wide conical foot each deeply cut with stiff leaves, the domed cover also with a band of facets below a formal border of strapwork and foliate scrollwork, the hollow baluster finial cut with stiff leaves, 30cm high (2) Provenance With Uwe Friedleben Kunsthandel, 3 November 1985 Christian von Reitzenstein Collection The Order of the Black Eagle was founded on 17 January 1701 by Frederick I of Prussia and was the highest order of chivalry in the Kingdom of Prussia. The distinctive style of faceting seen around the rim and cover was used on Brandenburg covered glasses from about 1680 to 1715.
