95. * BAMILEKE FIGURE, CAMEROON mu-po wood, shell, fibre Height 18 cm Provenance Colonel F. Clement C. Egerton Mrs. Morris-Adams, daughter of Col. Egerton Christie's, London, 16 October 1979, lot 105 Clement Egerton was awarded the Gilchrist Scholarship for 1925-1926 at the School of Oriental and African Studies. With the help of C.C. Shu, later famous under his pen-name Lao She, he translated the 17th century erotic classic Chinese novel, Jin Ping Mei as The Golden Lotus. In 1937 he travelled to French Cameroon where he spent several months, much of the time as a guest of King N'jiké II of Bangangté. His experiences he published as African Majesty: A Record of Refuge at the Court of the King of Bangangté in the French Cameroons (London, 1938).
