Beau gobelet à pied gravé d'un portrait royal, Thuringe, attribué à Georg Ernst Kunckel, vers 1720-30 A fine Thuringian Royal engraved portrait goblet attributed to Georg Ernst Kunckel, circa 1720-30 The tall round funnel bowl decorated with a bust portrait of Charles VI in profile within a frame and the inscription 'Dem Kayser gibt das Glück, Sehr angenehme Blick' (Happiness gives the Emperor a very pleasant look), titled 'C. VI' in a small scrolled cartouche beneath, the rim cut with a band of lenses, a border of polished arches and sepal ornament to the base of the bowl, the stem with a hollow inverted baluster cut with a band of polished circlets set between double collars, over a spreading foot with a border of foliate scroll flourishes, 23.7cm high Provenance With Heide Hübner Kunsthandel, 27 October 1988 Christian von Reitzenstein Collection Charles VI was Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of the Austrian Habsburg monarchy from 1711 until his death in 1740. It is possible that the inscription around the portrait refers to his triumph over the Turks at the Battle of Petrovaradin in 1716 and the Siege of Belgrade in 1717, through his General, Prince Eugene of Savoy. A goblet of comparable form attributed to Kunckel, engraved with the arms of von Seckendorff, is illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Die Glasammlung des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums München, Vol.2, 1982, p.201, pl.XXII, no.570. This has an inscription in an identical hand and an identical border to the base of the bowl.
