A French, late Romanesque grotesque animal's head in sandstone, 12th century Carved in yellowish-grey sandstone with an age patina. The animal's head with gaping maw, horns and a mane. A fragment of a frieze or capital, a slanting fracture line at the back. Knocked in places. Mounted on a modern stone pedestal. Dimensions of the head 13 x 12 x 19 cm. Provenance: Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Gabrielse, Middelburg (NL), acquired from Nagel in Stuttgart, 2008. Condition: III
