Lot 2219
A German bronze processional cross, probably second half 12th century
The cross beams, the lowest of which has a pricket on its underside, are each decorated with borders of identical stylised rosettes. The crowned Corpus Christi is shown crucified with four nails, His feet resting on a subpedaneum. The perizonium is carefully rendered and of noticeably angular design. The work is almost certainly German in origin and it has been suggested that it may have been made in Saxony.
Engraved gilded bronze
Height 36 cm. Width 24 cm
A small breakage to the neck of Christ. Minimal wear, two of the finials at the angles lost.
